Brilliant! No notes! You took me on a ride of smiling at familiar favourites, cringing at only now being introduced to J Dilla (why did nobody teach me?!?), and mild confusion at WTF is Gregg Wallace 😂. Sampling is an art...there's nothing better than recognising a motif as a distant resampled familiarity or loud and proud as the crux of the original. Eish...I didn't realise you were writing your D3. I would have wished you oodles of luck if I'd known. I hope it went well. You've clearly survived...so I can only assume it went well. Fingers crossed for great results!!!
I felt the same way when I first discovered J Dilla but that cringing feeling was quickly replaced by an eagerness to fill my ears with all things Dilla (reading a great book at the moment - 'Dilla Time', which has led me down even more rabbit holes) Haha the confusion around Gregg Wallace is understandable... he's not worth the google search bar!
What I love most about sampling is working backwards to discover the original and then flicking back and forth between original and its reincarnated soul.
Thank you, I survived the exams and hopefully done enough to never have to do them again!
I just realised that today is a public holiday...so I am diving into J Dilla right now (with a local 2020 Palomino...colour me inspired by your writing!
Yeah...I kinda just looked at Gregg's smile and then moved on. If anyone ever mentioned his name again it'd probably need another Google search!
I've no doubt that you nailed the exam. As much as I'd love to tell you to forget about it until your results...I split my tasting and theory. Tasting was always my weak point... I'd failed both my D4 & D5 tasting exams...but pulled a Merit for D3. So...if I can do it, anybody can!!!!! You'll pass. Also...I've seen your writing, so I reckon Theory was a breeze for you too.
Lucky you - that sounds like a great way to spend the day! Haha yes, probably best to do so.
Thank you for the vote of confidence - we shall see in a few weeks but for now it's nice not to have to think about it and can write some non-WSET tasting notes on substack instead!
I'm humbled and will now search for that crumb of gold in everything! Nathaniel, your writing is so intricate and knowledgeable- you have totally nailed it once again.
Overawed by yours and Issariya's talent!
You’re far too kind but glad you’re still enjoying the posts!

He cool...I'm feeling it!
Hopefully your Diploma tasting went well. Great to see J Dilla and wine mentioned in the same sentence
Thanks Dan - fingers crossed! Haha always a good day when the two come together
