We are writers and music-lovers, and I suppose you could call us “wine people”. We both work for fine wine companies, meaning we regularly get to try all sorts of extraordinary wines that we could never possibly afford in our real lives (the reason we can’t afford them is precisely because we work in wine).
A wine doesn’t need to be remotely “fine” for it to be worth drinking though. It can be elegant, it can be rustic, it can be a carefully saved bottle for a special occasion, or it can be simply good enough for the given moment. More often than not, the pleasure you get from a wine is about who you’re sharing it with, what you’re eating, where you are… or perhaps what you’re listening to.
There is a tendency to communicate about wine in quite an insular way. Scan the shelves of any bookshop, and you’ll see that the wine section is pretty dry. In reality, wine is deeply interconnected with other art forms and aspects of culture. By honing in on its relationship with music, we hope to bridge that gap somewhat.
Whether or not you agree with the interpretations we put forward, at least it’s a thinking exercise of sorts – a way of reframing wine as something to reflect on, be creative with and have fun with.
